Traumatized, Distressed Soldiers Committing Suicide

Desperate veterans turn to suicide

On June 11, 2006, at 8:30 p.m., Randen Harvey, a 24-year-old Marine Corps veteran, walked into the emergency room of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Ann Arbor in such a state of despair he warned he “might jump off the roof or put a hose in his car exhaust.”

Four hours later, around 1 a.m., he was found on the roof of the nine-story building. Hospital security had to be called to bring him down.

Three days later, on June 15, the Marine who served two back-to-back combat tours in Iraq surrendered to his demons. He was found sprawled on the tile floor in the bathroom of his father’s Farmington Hills home, dead from an overdose of street and prescription drugs.

Several branches of the military are reporting significant spikes in the number of suicides committed by both active-duty troops and veterans returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Experts are calling the number of military-related suicides sweeping the country an “epidemic.”

Survivors of veterans who committed suicide are starting to file lawsuits, accusing the VA of medical malpractice. The agency also has come under attack by lawmakers and veterans’ groups charging that it failed to treat injured veterans for post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury, the signature wounds of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The agency also has been accused of manipulating suicide statistics to downplay the problem and systematically misdiagnosing returning combat soldiers who suffer mental illness because their resources are tapped.

“We are murdering our own children here,” said the chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, Rep. Bob Filner, D-Calif., in an interview with The Detroit News.

“The tragedy is we could have predicted this, what with multiple deployments, the type of urban warfare and the almost inevitable killing of innocent people. Now we have an epidemic on our hands. This is a national disgrace.” Full Story

Fish on Drugs

Pharmaceuticals found in fish across U.S.

Fish caught near wastewater treatment plants serving five major U.S. cities had residues of pharmaceuticals in them, including medicines used to treat high cholesterol, allergies, high blood pressure, bipolar disorder and depression, researchers reported Wednesday.

Findings from this first nationwide study of human drugs in fish tissue have prompted the Environmental Protection Agency to significantly expand similar ongoing research to more than 150 different locations.

“The average person hopefully will see this type of a study and see the importance of us thinking about water that we use every day, where does it come from, where does it go to? We need to understand this is a limited resource and we need to learn a lot more about our impacts on it,” said study co-author Bryan Brooks, a Baylor University researcher and professor who has published more than a dozen studies related to pharmaceuticals in the environment.

A person would have to eat hundreds of thousands of fish dinners to get even a single therapeutic dose, Brooks said. But researchers including Brooks have found that even extremely diluted concentrations of pharmaceutical residues can harm fish, frogs and other aquatic species because of their constant exposure to contaminated water.

Brooks and his colleague Kevin Chambliss tested fish caught in rivers where wastewater treatment plants release treated sewage in Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Orlando, Fla. For comparison, they also tested fish from New Mexico’s pristine Gila River Wilderness Area, an area isolated from human sources of pollution. Full Story

War Really *IS* Over – If We Want it to be!

Stop Participating in the Madness of War with the Choices that you Make:

*No vaccines – Immunization is achieved through a healthy, wholesome diet. Research the deleterious effects of vaccinations, making an informed decision before submitting to them.
*No fluoride – It doesn’t protect your teeth, it sheaths your mind so you cannot think properly.
*No anti-mind drugs – Stop covering up states of depression or bi-polar with mind-altering drugs that skew judgement and further disrupt the neurotransmitters. Stop drugging children!
*No junk food – Get off all fast food, discontinue packaged man-made foods and eat what comes from the earth. Try to eat vegetarian and organically grown foods – Get digging that garden plot
*No paying taxes that fund wars that kill innocent people in faraway lands rich with resources
*No sending children to war
*Turn off that TV and free your mind of the propaganda it spews. Use the time to read, visit, dream, be…
*Question Authority. It’s our right, responsibility and is the only way to evolve. To blindly follow can lead one to dark places.
*Religion that preaches separation, war, hate does not originate from a true spiritual source. Find a personal path where love and unity are practiced on a daily, continual basis.
*Stand up and speak out about that which is wrong – actively participate in subverting the paradigm
*No senseless shopping – consume only that which is needed, buying fair trade items as much as possible. Boycott Wal-mart, Nike, Adidas, and all other corporations that we know are exploitive of people and the planet.
*Don’t get stuck in the ‘glamour trap’. Trash all forms of manipulation that keep women and men beLIEving the myth of beauty. Beauty is in the heart that loves without conditions, in a critically thinking mind, in a life lived with integrity.
*Love women, all women, by refusing to exploit their sexual bodies. Pornography keeps women (and men) oppressed and feeds the sick system with obscene amounts of revenue.
*Love the Earth as your Mother who provides us a rich bounty of life. Use chemical-free products and live simply so that others may simply live.
*Arms are for hugging. Love instead of Hate. Barriers between people, states, nations only exist in our controlled minds. Celebrate rather than denigrate people that are different (we’re all different!). Marvel at different skin tones, features, languages, customs.

Love, just Love…
